Providing Community-Based Funeral Cover for Low-Income Women and Families in Malawi

Through its project, CIC Insurance Group will expand access to the Kangachepe group life insurance product—an affordable, community-based solution designed to provide funeral coverage for low-income women and their families in Malawi.

The project addresses the critical lack of financial protection in rural areas, where women—often earning less than USD 3 a day—shoulder the bulk of household responsibilities and are highly vulnerable to economic shocks such as the death of a spouse or family member.

By targeting women’s groups, cooperatives, and village savings and loan groups (VSLGs), the project aims to reach 46,000 new policyholders and cover an estimated 156,400 lives by March 2026. Delivered through trusted community structures and supported by mobile payments, the product ensures flexibility, affordability, and accessibility for women in underserved areas in Malawi.

With co-funding from CIC and the UNDP ICMIF Insurance Innovation Challenge, Kangachepe empowers rural women with meaningful protection against life risks, promotes household resilience, and supports inclusive financial development.  This project will also foster empowerment through financial education and a gender-responsive distribution model.
